SKATING SKILLS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN EVERY LEVEL OF ATHLETE FROM SQUIRTS TO BANTAMS, TO JUNIORS TO THE NHL.
“Skating is at the very core of skill development in hockey. Skating ability determines the ability threshold for puck handling, passing, body contact and shooting.
It is important that young players focus on learning the proper skating fundamentals, and that skating is continually worked on as a player progresses.”

Open Ice
While working with a coach to learn proper skating skills is extremely important… so is the time spent practicing those skills outside of our lessons. This is why we always offer and encourage our registered athletes to take advantage of our ice time.
Our coaching team currently works with one group at at time; meaning we take up about one third to one half of the ice for structured learning. This leaves the other side of the ice open for registered athletes (not in the active lesson) to practice on their own. Those who put in the extra practice outside of their lesson will always see a greater return in their investment.
There are always pucks and a net available for stick handling and shooting.

Taking full strides and never got beat…
“My son’s team won their game last night. Every time he had to skate hard and fast on defense he was doing what you taught and taking full strides and never got beat.”

So, why is skating with Oka different?
First, our programming is personal. We evaluate the athletes' skating skills on day 1, and address key areas of their skating over the following sessions. We also work with small groups, allowing for more personal feedback each session than large groups allows.
How are Kids Grouped?
The enrollment form will ask your athlete's team level. This is a starting point for us. Team level does not equal a certain skating skill level. Therefore, your child may be placed with others at different team levels… our goal is to always group athletes with similar skating skills/needs so our lessons can be efficient as possible.
